That alone is worth the 5 stars, even given the strange ending. Guterson is in top form as a literary author. Nonetheless, I found this story to be important. From the title, I guessed it’s about the narrator’s father, but the swift change in cadence and subject left me scratching my head. Subjects like tea, socialism and racist white guys ramble along.
